Ji-Lin Ginseng (Panax Ginseng)

Much like its American counterpart, Chinese ginseng has also gained the attention of scientific researchers all over the world. One group of researchers at the Gifu Pharmaceutical University in Japan reported the following, suggesting that the root of Panax ginseng contains a biologically active NGF-like immunoreactive substance:

"Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic factor that is necessary for the survival and growth of developing sympathetic and sensory neurons, as well as basal forebrain cholinergic neurons in the brain. NGF has gained special attention in the case of Alzheimer's disease (AD) because basal forebrain cholinergic neurons are damaged selectively in AD.

"The root of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (Araliaceae) has been used as a restorative drug, sedative, psychic energizer, and agent to counter senile changes and to prolong vital force. And recently, Panax ginseng has been shown to have some components with NGF-like activity or stimulatory effects on NGF action...Moreover, evidence showing the existence of peptidic cell growth factors like epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like substance in ginseng extracts has been reported, and novel action of components from Panax ginseng against the central nervous system have been recognized."

Another group of Japanese researchers reported that two acidic polysaccharides from the root of Panax ginseng manifested signs of immunological activity. They report, "Both polysaccharides showed remarkable reticuloendothelial system-potentiating activity in a carbon clearance test, pronounced anti-complementary activity and alkaline phosphatase-inducing activity in a dose dependent manner."
